But honestly the 3rd Century crisis period has a great "core". The down side, of course, is that you are restricted to a historical period unless you want to use imagi-nations. I actually favor the period campaign concept of Aurelian - it's something that really puts you back into the historical decision making they used back in the day - something that is wholly missing in most table top gaming. The supplement booklets are really just army lists on a spreadsheet. The guy is first rate to deal with, runs an amazing blog, and every single item that he sells for this game was used on this table - the rules, chits, cards, game mat, and even that one little hill were all from him. One word of note about the author, Simon Miller. I am going to be beefing them all up slightly, as it looks like 8 feet of tableĬould easily handle another 6-7 units of infantry to act as a second line. Given that this was the first game for any of us, we did a number of things wrong, and we also only just started to learn the fundamentals that this game rewards.

I did struggle to find some rules, despite an Index, so I am going to look for a FAQ, which is what I think I actually needed. It was clearly written by someone who games a lot of ancients, and who has done an amazing job at stripping the genre down to its essentials to provide a mainline of fun, and a minimum of fiddly base measuring. A game you can resolve in ~2 hours, works well for multi-player, and is a fun time. In theĮnd, the German infantry had just that little bit more cardio, but theĪll in all, this game did what it said on the box. The players were remarkably bloodthirsty, preferring to push theirĮxhausted forces onwards rather than try to rally off Disorders. That was the final dreg of German morale, and they simply were not willing to fight further that day, no matter what their chieftains screamed. Their presence was sorely missed in the center, but it was the German cavalry who ultimately quit the field leaving the entire right flank exposed to the Roman horsemen. The Romans could not catch the horsemen, but they certainly could push them off the board, or into a funnel for the Roman Equites. However the Roman Veteran skill and heavy armor slowly won the day with the aid of two cohorts of legionnaires, who were used to box in the Germanic Cavalry. The far right saw showers of javelins between the cavalry, who were cautious about coming to grips. The center was a loss for the Romans as the Germans surged toward victory.until matters were finally decided on the wings. This ultimately doomed them in the center as they could never get that rampaging mob of Germans under control, and had no reserves. Romans were great at saves, but struggled with "to hits". The initial clash was dominated by the Romans with their deadly Pila, but a furious push by one of the bands of Warriors punched right through the Roman line, and then the game really began. This main clash was a charnel house of death, where the Romans felt the weight of the larger German Warbands. The center was eager to come to grips though, with the Romans pushing their Legion forward in an organized, if thin, line abreast. This is what happened on the right flank, where a Roman stratagem forced the Germans to essentially lose a turn on the flank, but then the Romans failed an activation immediately, also losing their turn! This trend continued, and ultimately the right flank was little more than a delaying action, with only minor fighting compared to the savagery elsewhere on the field. This lets you reach for big moves, but you can also come up totally short at times, with very little activity. Of course the center was the heavy infantry clash, although with some noticeable gaps.Īlthough the Germans were in an aggressive posture, the way the game works is that you keep giving orders for each command until an order is failed - then that entire command is done for the turn. On the right there were all manner of light troops, massed bowmen, and other Auxiliaries. Well, they had a lot of them, but they were rated as "raw", which is TTS!'s equivalent of rookies, so it was their quantity against the Roman's quality on the far left flank. The Germans were representing the Chatti tribe, who at this time were known for their Cavalry forces. I think the next game we'll play that part out. I had pre-set up the board, so no serious terrain features to speak of. We played our learning game tonight of To The Strongest! Pete and Dick took the side of the Principate Romans, under Emperor Domitian, to put down a savage tribal incursion into Pannonia (modern Hungary), in the year 85 A.D.
